Joseph Byron (born January 1847 – died May 28, 1923) was a talented English photographer. He started his own business, the Byron Company, in New York City.
A Family of Photographers
Joseph Byron was born in England in January 1847. Photography was a family tradition for him. His father, grandfather, and even his great-grandfather were all photographers!
Joseph Byron once received a special job from the British government. He was asked to take pictures of the conditions inside English coal mines.
Moving to America
In 1888, Joseph Byron moved to the United States. He came with his children, including his son Percy Claude Byron. His daughters, Florence Mabel Byron and Georgina Byron, also came along.
In 1892, Joseph opened his own photography studio. It was a commercial studio located in Manhattan, New York City.
Capturing Broadway
Joseph Byron became very well known for his work. He specialized in photographing Broadway shows. He captured many other stage productions too. His pictures helped show what these exciting performances looked like.
His son, Percy Claude Byron, also became a famous photographer. Percy was known as the best photographer of ships and the sea during his time.
Joseph Byron also worked for The New York Times newspaper. He took pictures for them in the 1890s. He passed away on May 28, 1923, in Manhattan.
