A Night on the Harbor
On the evening of May 29, 1873, Joseph Gayles went out into New York Harbor. He was with two other gang members, Bum Mahoney and Billy Woods. Their plan was to raid a ship called the Margaret. This ship was a type of sailing vessel known as a brig and was waiting to be loaded with goods.
Discovery and Escape
The three men managed to sneak onto the ship. However, the ship's captain and two crew members woke up. They discovered Gayles and his friends trying to open a large chest. After a struggle with the crew, the three gang members had to quickly leave the ship. They managed to sail away and disappeared into the thick fog.
The Chase and Capture
As Gayles and his friends tried to sail back to shore, a police patrol boat spotted them. Shots were fired between the pirates and the police officers. During this exchange, Gayles was shot in the chest.
A Difficult Decision
Even though Gayles was hurt, the other two gang members kept rowing. Billy Woods told Bum Mahoney to push Gayles overboard. Woods thought this would make their boat lighter and help them escape the police faster.
Gayles' Last Moments
Joseph Gayles managed to swim back to their boat. Despite Woods telling Mahoney to hit Gayles' hands with an oar, Mahoney helped Gayles get back into the boat. However, Gayles soon died from his injury. The two remaining gang members then threw his body into the water again as they made their escape. His body was found floating in the harbor four days later.
