The Joseph Hicks House is a very old and important home located at 494 Main Road in Tiverton, Rhode Island. This house is special because it shows us what homes looked like a long time ago. It was built in 1788, which means it's over 230 years old!
This historic house is a two-story building made of wood. It was first built with brick walls on its sides, which made people in the area call it "the Brick House." Later, in 1893, these brick walls were covered with wooden boards called clapboarding. Even with these changes, the house still looks much like it did when it was first built in the Federal style.
Discovering the Joseph Hicks House
The Joseph Hicks House is a great example of early American architecture. It helps us understand how people lived and built homes in the late 1700s. The house is named after the Hicks family, who were among the first people to settle in the Tiverton area. They owned this house for many years.
What is the Federal Style?
The Federal style was popular in the United States from about 1780 to 1830. It came after the American Revolution. Homes in this style often look balanced and simple. They usually have a main entrance in the middle and windows placed evenly on both sides.
The Joseph Hicks House shows some key features of the Federal style:
- It has a main front that is "five bays wide." This means it has five sections or openings across the front, usually with a door in the middle and two windows on each side.
- It has a "hip roof." This type of roof slopes downward on all four sides, meeting at a ridge at the top. The eaves (the parts of the roof that hang over the walls) on this house are a bit deeper than usual for Federal homes.
A Protected Piece of History
Because the Joseph Hicks House is so old and important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The National Register is a special list kept by the United States government. It includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. Being on this list helps protect the house and makes sure its history is remembered for future generations.
