Joseph's Early Life

Joseph was the fourth of five children in his family. His parents were Dorothy and Elijah Wooten. All of his brothers, Victor Wooten, Roy "Futureman" Wooten, Regi Wooten, and Rudy Wooten (who has passed away), are also musicians.

When Joseph was just 11 years old, he started performing with his brothers. They played together in their family band, called The Wooten Brothers. Because their dad was in the United States Air Force, Joseph's family moved around a lot. They finally settled in Newport News, Virginia, in 1972.

Joseph finished high school at Denbigh High School in 1979. While he was in high school, Joseph and his brothers often played music. They performed country music at the Busch Gardens theme park in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Joseph's Music Career

Joseph Wooten has been the main keyboard player and a background singer for the Steve Miller Band since 1993. That's a long time playing with a famous rock band!

Besides his work with the Steve Miller Band, Joseph has also released his own music. He has two solo albums: Soul of Freedom (released in 2013) and Hands of Soul (from 2003). He has also helped produce music for over 35 other albums.

He has also performed his songs on TV. In February 2018, he played his song "Unity" live on the Today in Nashville show. Later that year, in November 2018, he performed "We Are American" with his band, The Hands of Soul, on the same show.
