Joseph Bergen's Life and Work
Joseph Bergen was born in Red Beach, Maine. He went to Antioch College and graduated in 1872. After college, he worked for the Ohio Geological Survey, which studies the Earth's natural features in Ohio. He also taught natural sciences at Lombard College.
In 1883, Bergen became the principal of the high school in Peabody, Massachusetts. Later, from 1889 to 1901, he taught at the English High School of Boston. His dedication to science was recognized when he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1915. This is a special honor for people who have made important contributions to arts and sciences.
On June 28, 1876, Joseph Bergen married Fanny Dickerson. She was also a graduate of Antioch College. Together, they wrote a book called A Primer of Darwinism and Organic Evolution, which was published in 1890. This book helped explain ideas about evolution to a wider audience.
Fanny Dickerson Bergen was also a talented writer and expert in her own right. She published many articles and books about American folklore, which are the traditional stories, customs, and beliefs of a community.
