The Joseph and Mary Jane League House, also known as the League House, is a special home in Macon, Georgia. It is important because of its unique design. It also has a strong connection to two of Georgia's first female architects. These were Ellamae Ellis League and her daughter, Jean League Newton.
The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in January 2009. This is a list of places in the United States that are worth saving.
A Special House Design
The League House was built in 1950. It was designed by Jean League Newton. She was one of the first women to become an architect in Georgia. Her mother, Ellamae Ellis League, was also a famous architect.
The house was so interesting that it was shown in a magazine. This was Progressive Architecture in July 1953. It was also in a book called Quality Budget Houses in 1954. This shows how well-designed and important the house was.
Part of a Historic Area
The League House is also part of a larger area. This area is called the Shirley Hills Historic District. A historic district is a neighborhood with many old and important buildings. The League House is a "contributing property" in this district. This means it helps make the district special and adds to its history.
The National Park Service also recognized the house. It was featured as a "property of the week" in their program. This program started in July 2008.
