Joseph of Freising facts for kids
Joseph of Freising (died 17 January 764) was an important leader of the church. He was a Bishop of Freising from about 747 or 748 until he passed away. He is also known as Joseph of Verona.
About Joseph's Life
We don't know exactly where Joseph was born. Some people think he came from Verona in Italy, which is why he is sometimes called Joseph of Verona. However, he might also have been from Bavaria, northern Austria, or the Tyrol region.
Joseph was likely a monk at Freising Abbey. This abbey was a new religious place started by Saint Corbinian. In 747 or 748, Joseph became the bishop of Freising. He was the third person to hold this important position.
Joseph was known for being very dedicated to the church. He worked hard to help the church grow and become stronger. He was good at getting donations, especially land, which helped the church gain many properties.
Building Churches and Monasteries
Joseph also helped start new churches and religious houses. In 752, he founded Isen Abbey. He dedicated this abbey to Saint Zeno of Verona.
After 760, Joseph also worked with other people to set up Schäftlarn and Scharnitz Abbeys. At Schäftlarn, he was given the power to oversee the monastery. He could also choose who would lead the monks there. His first choice was Aribo, who later became bishop after Joseph.
At Scharnitz, Joseph chose Atto to lead the abbey. Atto later became bishop of Freising after Aribo. Atto was also very successful in getting more land for the church.
Joseph's Burial and Legacy
Joseph passed away on January 17, 764. He was buried in the church at Isen Abbey, the place he had founded. His tomb was repaired in 1743.
The church at Isen Abbey is still used today. It is called St. Zeno's and serves as the local parish church for Isen.
People in the area honor Joseph as the Blessed Joseph. Even though he was never officially made a saint, he is still remembered. His special day is January 17.
