Joshua Edward Cooper was an important Irish landowner and politician who lived from about 1761 to 1837. He came from County Sligo in Ireland. He was known for owning a large estate called Markree Castle and for serving in the government.
Early Life and Family
Joshua Edward Cooper was the oldest son of Joshua Cooper, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Alicia, whose father was Edward Synge, a bishop.
Joshua Edward had a younger brother named Edward Synge Cooper. He went to school in Drogheda and later studied at Trinity College Dublin, a famous university. In 1801, he married Elizabeth Lindsay. Her father, Robert Lindsay, was also an MP. When Joshua Edward's father passed away in 1801, he inherited the family home, Markree Castle.
A Career in Politics
Joshua Edward Cooper was involved in politics for many years. From 1790 to 1800, he was one of the two Members of Parliament for County Sligo in the House of Commons of Ireland. This was like being a representative for his local area in the Irish government.
In 1800, a big change happened called the Act of Union. This law joined the parliaments of Ireland and Great Britain. After this, Joshua Edward Cooper became an MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. He represented County Sligo in this new parliament until 1806.
He didn't speak much in the UK Parliament. By 1806, he had some health issues that made it hard for him to continue his work. So, he stepped down from his role. His younger brother, Edward Synge Cooper, then took over managing the family estates and became the new MP for County Sligo.
Other Important Roles
Besides being an MP, Joshua Edward Cooper held other important positions. In 1802, he was the Governor of County Sligo. This was a key role in managing the county.
He was also an officer in the Sligo militia, which was a local military group. He started as a major in 1793, became a lieutenant-colonel in 1795, and was promoted to colonel in 1804. He served as a colonel until 1807.
Later Life
Joshua Edward Cooper passed away in 1837. He and his wife Elizabeth did not have any children. Because of this, Markree Castle and the family estates were inherited by his nephew, Edward Joshua Cooper. His nephew was the son of his brother, Edward Synge Cooper.
