Joshua Orwa Ojode (born December 29, 1958 – died June 10, 2012) was an important politician from Kenya. He first became a member of parliament in 1994. He represented the Ndhiwa Constituency for the National Development party. In 2007, he joined the Orange Democratic Movement party. He also served as an assistant minister, helping with local government and internal security.
Early Life and Education
Joshua Ojode went to Ratanga Primary School from 1966 to 1972. He then attended Maranda School between 1973 and 1976. After school, he worked at the Ministry of Water. He was an assistant water bailiff from 1978 to 1981.
Later, he went to Ramapo College of New Jersey. He studied Environmental Studies and International Studies there. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree between 1988 and 1991. Before becoming a politician, he also worked as a marketing manager. He even taught at Aquinas High School for a time.
Political Journey
Ojode began his political career in 1994. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Ndhiwa Constituency. He was re-elected in 1997, showing people trusted him. In 2000, he became the Assistant Minister for Education, Science & Technology.
In 2001, while serving in this role, he proposed a new law. This was an alternative to a bill the government had presented. His proposed law, the 2001 Petroleum Amendment Bill, suggested a different way to regulate the oil industry.
His Final Years
Joshua Orwa Ojode was a strong supporter of the Kenyan government. He was known for his firm views on national security. Under his watch, "Operation Linda Nchi" (meaning "Guard the Nation") was launched. This operation was against the group Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
Sadly, Ojode died on June 10, 2012. He was in a police helicopter crash in Kenya. At the time, he was still a Member of Parliament. He was also a business person. He had survived another helicopter crash in 2009.
