Josie Farrer was born on 24 September 1947. She is a respected leader from the East Kimberley region. Her work has helped many people in Western Australia.

Early Life and Roots

Josie Farrer was born on a place called Moola Bulla Station. When she was a child, her family had to move to the nearby town of Halls Creek.

Josie is a member of the Kija people. This is an Indigenous Australian group from the East Kimberley. She grew up speaking Kija (also known as Gidja) as her first language. Later, she learned to speak Kriol and English too.

Serving Her Community

Before she became a politician in the state parliament, Josie Farrer was very active in her local community. She worked on the Halls Creek Shire Council for sixteen years. For seven of those years, she was the shire president, which is like being the mayor of the area.

She also served on the board of the Kimberley Land Council. This group works to protect the land rights and interests of Indigenous people in the Kimberley region.

Becoming a Politician

In June 2012, Josie Farrer was chosen by the Labor Party to run for the seat of Kimberley. This process is called preselection. She was chosen to replace Carol Martin, who was retiring.

At the 2013 state election, Josie won the seat. Even though she started with 26.7 percent of the first votes, she ended up winning with 55.1 percent of the final votes after preferences were counted.

Her Time in Parliament

Josie Farrer continued to represent the Kimberley area. She won her seat again at the 2017 state election. This time, she had even stronger support from voters.

In August 2020, Josie Farrer announced that she would be retiring from parliament. She did not run in the 2021 state election. Her time in parliament showed her dedication to the people of Kimberley.
