A Look at the Joslin Building's History

Imagine a time before huge malls! In 1873, a man named John Jay Joslin started a business called the Joslin Dry Goods Company. It was like a very early department store, selling things like fabric, clothes, and household items. It quickly became a big competitor to another famous store in Denver, The Denver Dry Goods Company, which opened a bit later in 1888.

Over time, Joslin's grew into a full-fledged department store, offering even more products. Later, a large company called Mercantile Stores bought Joslin's, adding it to their group of stores.

How the Building Changed Over Time

A famous architect from Denver, Frank E. Edbrooke, designed the original Joslin building. Over the years, the building was updated and changed several times. Major renovations happened in 1902, 1927, and 1964.

After the big remodel in 1964, the company changed its name to just "Joslins." This renovation also made big changes to how the outside of the building looked.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

Because of its important history and unique design, the Joslin Dry Goods Company Building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1997. This means it's recognized as a special place that's worth protecting for future generations.

Soon after it became a historic landmark, the building got a new life! It was turned into a modern 177-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel. So, a building that once sold clothes and fabrics now welcomes travelers from all over the world.
