Joslin Farm is a special old farm in Waitsfield, Vermont. It started around 1830. This farm is famous for its unique round barn. Not many round barns are left in Vermont! Today, Joslin Farm is a cozy place to stay. It is called The Inn at the Round Barn. The farm became a protected historic site in 1988. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
About Joslin Farm's Buildings
Joslin Farm is in a quiet, country part of Waitsfield. It covers about 84 acres (34 hectares) of land. This land is on both sides of East Warren Road. The part east of the road has open fields. The part to the west has open areas near the road. It becomes a forest as it goes up a hill.
The farm buildings are on the east side of the road. The special round barn is at the north end. The main house is a bit further south.
The Unique Round Barn
The barn at Joslin Farm is not perfectly round. It actually has twelve sides! It is made of wood. This barn is also a bank barn. This means you can enter it from the ground on three different levels. This design made it easy to move animals and hay.
The Farmhouse
The main house is a 2-1/2 story building. It is made of wood. It has a simple style called Greek Revival. This style was popular a long time ago. The house has several parts that extend to the north. These parts end with a carriage barn. A carriage barn was used to store horse-drawn carriages.
History of Joslin Farm
Cyrus Joslin bought this farm in November 1831. He lived there until he passed away in 1866. One of the older parts of the house is likely one of its extensions. The main part of the house was built later.
The unique round barn was probably built in 1910. Cyrus Joslin's grandson, Clem, likely built it. For many years in the 1900s, Joslin Farm was a dairy farm. Dairy farms raise cows to produce milk. The farm stopped being a dairy farm in 1977. After that, the buildings were fixed up. They became the bed and breakfast inn you see today.
