The Story of Josserand

How Josserand Began

Josserand was started in 1882 by two brothers, Peter and Frank Josserand. They built a large sawmill there. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber, which is wood used for building. The brothers bought a huge amount of forest land, about 60,000 acres, between 1880 and 1900. This helped the community grow very quickly.

Growing and Changing

In 1887, a post office opened in Josserand. This was an important step for the community. By 1892, Josserand had grown to 550 residents. It also had two churches and a general store. This shows how busy and lively the community was back then.

The Decline of Josserand

The community started to shrink after Peter Josserand passed away in 1905. The sawmill, which was the main reason for Josserand's growth, stopped working in 1909. The post office also closed much later, in 1948. By the early 1990s, only a few houses were left. In 2000, the population was reported as 29 people.
