José Antonio Chamot (born May 17, 1969) is a former Argentine football player and manager. He was known for playing as a full-back, usually on the left side of the field. Sometimes, he also played on the right side or even as a centre-back in the middle of the defense.

Playing for Clubs

José Chamot started his football journey in his home country, Argentina. He began playing professionally for Rosario Central in 1988.

Playing in Italy

After playing in Argentina, Chamot moved to Italy in 1991. He joined the club Pisa and played there until 1993. Next, he played for Foggia for one season, from 1993 to 1994.

His time at Lazio (1994–1998) was very important. He became known as one of the best full-backs in the Serie A, which is Italy's top football league. During his last season with Lazio, he helped the team win the 1997–98 Coppa Italia, a major Italian cup competition.

Playing in Spain and Back to Italy

After his time in Italy, Chamot moved to Spain. He played for Atlético Madrid for about a year and a half. In January 2000, he returned to Italy to join the famous club Milan.

At Milan, Chamot achieved great success. He helped the team win the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League, which is one of the biggest club competitions in European football. He also won the 2002–03 Coppa Italia again with Milan.

Final Years of Playing

In 2003, Chamot left Milan and joined the Spanish team Leganés. He had some injuries during this time. In 2004, he went back to Argentina to play for Rosario Central again, the club where he started. He played there until 2006. Due to more injuries, he decided to stop playing professional football at the end of 2006.

Playing for Argentina

José Chamot played for the Argentina national team for nine years, from 1993 to 2002. He played in 43 matches for his country.

World Cup Appearances

He represented Argentina in three FIFA World Cup tournaments:

Chamot was the main left-back for Argentina in both the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. In the 2002 World Cup, he played one match against Sweden as a right-back.

Olympic Games

He was also part of the Argentina under-23 squad that won a silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He was one of the three older players allowed on the team for the Olympics.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, José Chamot started a career in coaching.

  • From July 2009 to March 2010, he was an assistant manager at Rosario Central.
  • In June 2011, he became an assistant manager for River Plate and stayed there until November 2012.
  • In December 2015, he became the coordinator for the youth teams at Rosario Central. He left this role a year later.
  • He returned to Rosario Central on December 19, 2017, to manage their reserve team.
  • On March 7, 2019, he became the manager of Club Libertad in Paraguay. He left this position in December 2019.
