José Antonio Chamot (born May 17, 1969) is a famous former Argentine football player. He was known for playing as a defender, mostly on the left side of the field. Sometimes, he also played on the right or even in the middle. After his playing career, he became a football manager.

Playing for Clubs

José Chamot started his football journey in his home country, Argentina, playing for Rosario Central. He then moved to Italy, where he played for several teams.

Italian Football Teams

  • Pisa: From 1991 to 1993.
  • Foggia: From 1993 to 1994.
  • Lazio: From 1994 to 1998. During his time at Lazio, he became one of the best defenders in Italy's top league, Serie A. He helped Lazio win the 1997–98 Coppa Italia (Italian Cup).

Moving to Spain and Back to Italy

After Lazio, Chamot moved to Spain to play for Atlético Madrid. He played there for about a year and a half. In January 2000, he returned to Italy to join the big club A.C. Milan.

At Milan, he achieved great success:

  • He won the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League, which is one of the biggest club competitions in Europe.
  • He also won the 2002–03 Coppa Italia again.

Final Years as a Player

In 2003, Chamot left Milan and played for Leganés in Spain. He had some injuries during this time. From 2004 to 2006, he returned to Rosario Central in Argentina, the club where he began his professional career. Injuries continued to bother him, and he decided to retire from playing football at the end of 2006.

Playing for Argentina

José Chamot played for the Argentine national team 43 times over nine years (1993–2002). Playing for your country is called earning a "cap."

FIFA World Cups

He represented Argentina in three FIFA World Cup tournaments:

He was Argentina's main left-back in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. In 2002, he played one match against Sweden as a right-back.

Olympic Games

Chamot was also part of the Argentina under-23 squad that won the silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, USA. He was one of the three "overage players" (players older than 23) allowed in the team for the Olympics.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, José Chamot started a career in coaching.

  • Rosario Central (Assistant Manager): From July 2009 to March 2010.
  • River Plate (Assistant Manager): From June 2011 to November 2012, working under Matías Almeyda.
  • Rosario Central (Youth Coordinator): He became the coordinator for the youth teams at Rosario Central in December 2015.
  • Rosario Central B (Manager): He returned to Rosario Central in December 2017 to manage their reserve team until March 2019.
  • Club Libertad (Manager): In March 2019, he became the manager of Club Libertad, a position he held until December 2019.
