José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledón (born January 6, 1837 – died November 30, 1917) was a very important leader in Costa Rica. He served as the country's President from 1890 to 1894. He was known for being a skilled lawyer before he became president.

Early Life and Education
José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledón was born on January 6, 1837. He started studying law at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala. However, he had to stop his studies early. This was because of family reasons and money problems.
He returned to Costa Rica. Later, he finished his law degree. He graduated from the Universidad de Santo Tomás in San José.
Before Becoming President
Rodríguez was a respected lawyer. He had not been very active in politics before. But he was known for his work as a judge. He served as a Magistrate in the Supreme Court of Justice (Corte Suprema de Justicia). For a short time, he also worked for the government. He was a Secretary of State under President Bernardo Soto Alfaro.
Becoming President
José Joaquín Rodríguez became president after winning an election. He won with a large number of votes. His election marked a new time for Costa Rica. It was a time when leaders were chosen by the people.
When he first became president, Rodríguez wanted support from the church. This worried some groups called "liberals." They decided to help the president instead. With their help, he won against another group, the Catholic Party. This happened in elections for lawmakers.
In 1892, he made a big change. He closed down the Congress, which is like a parliament. For a while, he ruled like a strong leader. Even then, he kept his title as President. In 1893, he brought back people's rights. This allowed for a fairer election for the next president. The person who won was Rafael Yglesias Castro. He was the Minister of War and the Navy.
Rodríguez faced many challenges during his time as president. His main goal was always to help Costa Rica. Some people did not like his methods for keeping order.
What He Achieved as President
José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledón made several important improvements for Costa Rica.
- He helped education by creating night schools for adults. These schools were in the capital city and other big towns.
- He approved a plan to start telephone service. This brought phones to the capital and other areas in 1891.
- He began building the National Theatre in 1890. This beautiful building is still important today.
- He encouraged people from Europe to move to Costa Rica. This helped the country grow and develop its farms.
His Family Life
José Joaquín Rodríguez's parents were Sebastián Rodríguez Mora and Francisca Zeledón Aguilar. He married Luisa Alvarado Carrillo. They had several children together. One of their daughters, Manuela Rodríguez Alvarado, married the next president, Rafael Yglesias Castro. This was an interesting connection between the two leaders.
José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledón passed away on November 30, 1917. He was 80 years old.
