José Manuel Blecua Teijeiro (born in Alcolea de Cinca, Huesca, on November 10, 1913 – died in Barcelona on March 9, 2003) was a Spanish expert in language and literature. He was a professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Barcelona and a member of the Royal Spanish Academy, which is like a special group that takes care of the Spanish language.

Early Life and Education

José Manuel Blecua went to college at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Zaragoza. There, he learned from a teacher named Miguel Labordeta. Later, at the University of Zaragoza, he studied Law and Philosophy.

Teaching Career

He worked as a teacher for twenty years at the Cuevas Institute in Almanzora. After that, he taught at the Goya Institute in Zaragoza. In 1959, he moved to the Universidad de Barcelona. He helped start the Spanish Philological Institute there. He also wrote his special doctoral paper about a long poem called El Cancionero de 1628 by Adrián de Prado.

Expert in Golden Age Literature

Blecua was a specialist in poetry and literature from the "Siglo de Oro" (Golden Age). This was a very important time for Spanish art and writing. He published many books about this period. He also created a huge and important edition of the poems by Francisco de Quevedo. Quevedo was a famous writer from the Golden Age. Blecua also put together a big collection of Spanish Renaissance poetry.

Awards and Recognition

In 1993, José Manuel Blecua received the seventh Menéndez Pelayo International Prize. This is a very important award. An institute, which is like a school, in Zaragoza has been named after him to honor his work.
