A Life of Learning and Service

José Martín y Espinosa de los Monteros was born in Malaga, Spain, on November 29, 1776.

When he was a boy, José became an orphan. His uncle, Félix Espinosa de los Monteros, took care of him. José then joined the Real Colegio de San Telmo in Malaga. There, he learned important skills like mining, artillery, and how to be a pilot.

Military Career and New Home

José had a successful career in the Spanish Navy. He became a "Piloto Mayor," which was a very important position. It meant he was a chief pilot at the Casa de Contratación, a special trading house.

He was given an honorable discharge by a royal decree. This was a special order from the king, recognizing his great service to the Spanish Crown. After this, José decided to move to Mérida, a city in the Yucatan area. This place was then called New Spain, and it is now part of Mexico.

Contributions to Society

Once in Mérida, José dedicated himself to helping the public. He worked as a financier for the Yucatan Province. This meant he helped manage money for the region.

He also helped run different charities. José was an active member of the Council of Trade of Yucatan. He also helped with public examinations as a Synod member.

A Man of Many Talents

  • He was a great mathematician and astronomer.
  • He loved nature and studied plants in the Yucatan Peninsula. He wanted to find out how they could be used.
  • He was also a surveyor and cartographer, meaning he measured land and made maps.
