The Journal Building is a cool old building in downtown Augusta, Maine. It was built way back in 1899! This building has had a few names, like the Gannett Building and Handley Hall. It's famous for its beautiful Renaissance Revival style. For many years, it was home to Augusta's main newspaper, the Kennebec Journal. Today, it's part of the University of Maine at Augusta. It was even added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because it's so important!

Exploring the Journal Building

The Journal Building stands on Water Street. This is the main street in downtown Augusta. It is a five-story building made of red brick. It also has fancy granite details.

What the Building Looks Like

The first floor has three shop entrances. These have modern glass and metal. Brick pillars separate each entrance. The floors above have nine window sections. Each floor is separated by decorative brickwork.

Windows on the second, third, and fourth floors are arched. The top floor windows are round. All the windows are grouped in threes. The building has a cool, detailed roof edge. This edge sticks out a bit.

A Look at Its History

The Kennebec Journal newspaper started in 1825. They rented different places for many years. Then, in 1899, they built this very building! A local architect named Arthur G. Wing designed it. Sadly, he passed away young in 1912.

Augusta has other buildings in the Renaissance style. But the Journal Building is one of the best examples. It has changed very little over time. Today, the building is called Handley Hall. It houses the art and architecture classes for the University of Maine at Augusta. You can even find art galleries on the ground floor!
