Jovan Pavlović (born Joco Pavlović; 22 October 1936 – 3 April 2014) was an important leader in the Serbian Orthodox Church. He served as the metropolitan bishop of Zagreb and Ljubljana from 1982 until his death in 2014.
He was a very well-known person in the Serbian community in Croatia. Jovan was born in the village of Medinci and passed away in Zagreb. For over twenty years, he was the highest representative of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Croatia.
Early Life and Learning
Jovan Pavlović was born in Medinci in 1936. He went to elementary school in his home village. He finished secondary school in Podravska Slatina.
After that, he studied at the Rakovica Monastery. He then graduated from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Orthodox Theology in 1963. He continued his studies in Germany.
He learned about different types of theology at the University of Kiel and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. During this time, he also visited several monasteries in Belgium and Germany.
Jovan worked as a teacher at the Serbian Orthodox Seminary of Prizren. He also taught at Krka monastery. In 1967, he became a monk at Krka. In 1969, he became a hierodeacon, which is a type of church official.
In 1977, he became the bishop of Lepavina Monastery. Then, in 1982, he became the Metropolitan of Zagreb.
Leading the Church
From 1982 to 1992, Metropolitan Jovan represented the Serbian Orthodox Church at the World Council of Churches. This is an organization that brings together many different Christian churches.
He was also a member of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church many times. This is like a main council that makes important decisions for the church. From 1994 to 2011, Serbian Orthodox churches in Italy were also under his care.
Awards and Achievements
Jovan Pavlović received an award from the Croatian Helsinki Committee. This award was given to him for helping to improve understanding and peace between different religions. He worked to promote religious tolerance.
