Joy Westmore (born Grisold; March 13, 1932 – November 5, 2020) was a well-known Australian actress. She worked in radio, on stage, and on television. She also did voice-over work. Many people knew her best for her role as Officer Joyce Barry in the TV show Prisoner. This character was a friendly but not very effective prison officer. Joy Westmore appeared in Prisoner from its first season in 1979 until the very last episode in 1986. She also had smaller parts in the popular show Neighbours in 1991 and 2003.

Joy Westmore's Acting Career

Joy Westmore started her acting career in 1950. She began by reading commercials on the radio. She was especially famous for working with Barry Humphries, who played the character Dame Edna Everage.

Early TV Roles

Joy Westmore also appeared in early TV comedy sketches. She worked with famous Australian TV hosts like Graham Kennedy and Ernie Sigley. Her first TV movie role was in The Sentimental Bloke. After that, she had roles in other TV shows. These included the soap opera The Sullivans and the series Bellbird.

Playing Officer Joyce Barry

Her most famous role was Officer Joyce Barry in the TV show Prisoner. She was a regular part of the cast for the first five years. Then, in 1984, she became a main character and stayed until the show ended in 1986. Entertainment reporter Peter Ford once said that Joyce Barry was "probably the world's worst prison officer." This was because she was too kind and trusting. However, her character also brought a lot of funny moments to the show.

Later TV Appearances

After Prisoner, Joy Westmore continued acting. She played Mrs. Blanche White in the Australian version of the TV game show Cluedo. She also had two short roles in Neighbours. She played Mrs. Forster in 1991 and Nancy Bliss, who was Dee Bliss's grandmother, in 2003. Joy Westmore also took on various small roles in different TV dramas. These included Waiting at the Royal, Fergus McPhail, and Blue Heelers.

Joy Westmore's Personal Life

Joy Westmore married Brian Westmore, who was a dentist. They got married on March 13, 1960. This was also Joy's 28th birthday! They had four children together.

Her Passing

Joy Westmore passed away on November 5, 2020. She was 88 years old. She died in an aged care facility in Melbourne, Victoria.
