The Joyner Building was a special old building on the campus of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. It was built a long time ago, between 1913 and 1914. This building was made of red bricks and had a cool "Colonial" style, which means it looked a bit like buildings from early American history. It had two main floors and a basement.

In 1978, the Joyner Building was added to a special list called the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important historical places. Sadly, the building was destroyed by a fire in 1981. Today, where the building once stood, there is a nice open space called Joyner Plaza.

What Was the Joyner Building Used For?

The Joyner Building was destroyed by a fire on January 15, 1981. This happened just when it was about to be fixed up and made new again.

Even though it was built in 1913-1914, the building was used for many different things over the years. It had classrooms where students learned. There were also labs for experiments and offices for the university's leaders.

The building also held the college's post office, where students could send and receive mail. It had a college shop and a book exchange too. For many years, the college library was located inside the Joyner Building.

At the time of the fire, the Joyner Building was the oldest building on campus. It was home to the Western Carolinian, which was the university's newspaper. It was also a meeting place for many student groups and clubs.

After the fire, the damaged parts of the building were taken down the following week. The area is now a public space called Joyner Plaza. Today, the oldest buildings on the Western Carolina University campus are Moore Hall (built 1917–1924) and the Steam Plant (built 1924).
