Joël-Guy Batteux was a French politician who lived from 1943 to 2021. He was well-known for being the mayor of Saint-Nazaire for many years.

A Life in Politics

Joël Batteux was part of different political groups in France. He was a member of the Socialist Party. He also joined the Citizens' Movement and another group called AGR. Later, he returned to the Socialist Party.

He became the Mayor of Saint-Nazaire in 1983. He held this important job for a long time, until 2014.

Working for France

In 1997, Joël Batteux tried to become a member of the French National Assembly. This is like being a representative in the French government. He ran with the Citizens' Movement party. Even though he got a good number of votes, he stepped aside. This allowed another politician, Claude Évin, to win the seat. He left the Citizens' Movement party in 2002.

In 2008, he received a special honor from the United Kingdom. It was called the Order of the British Empire. He got this award because he helped build good relationships between France and the UK while he was mayor.

Later in 2008, he briefly took on a leadership role in the Socialist Party. In 2014, he decided not to run for mayor again in Saint-Nazaire. This allowed David Samzun to become the new mayor. After leaving his role as mayor, Joël Batteux was appointed to the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council. This council gives advice to the French government on important topics.

Joël Batteux passed away on January 10, 2021, at the age of 77.
