Joan Antonio Mogel Urkiza (born in 1745, died in 1804) was an important writer from the Basque Country. He lived in the 1700s. He wrote one of the most famous books in the Basque language, called Peru Abarka. This book was the very first novel ever written in Basque!

Mogel finished Peru Abarka in 1782. But it wasn't printed as a full book until 1881. Before that, parts of it were published in a newspaper starting in 1880.

Mogel was also the uncle and teacher of Vicenta Moguel. She was a writer and translator, and she was the first woman to write in the Basque language. Vicenta and her brother Juan José lived with Mogel in Markina, Spain. He taught them important subjects like Latin, Basque, and Spanish. He also helped them become interested in reading and writing.
