Early Life and Beginnings
Juan Bautista Arismendi was born in La Asuncion, a town on Isla Margarita, in 1775. When the fight for independence began, he was a captain. He quickly took charge of the patriots, who were people fighting for Venezuela's freedom.
Fighting for Freedom
Arismendi played a key role in driving out the Spanish General Pablo Morillo from Isla Margarita. This was after a long and difficult conflict. He was a strong leader who helped gather a special meeting called a provincial congress. This meeting happened in Angostura on July 20, 1817.
Leading the Government
At this congress, Arismendi and other leaders decided to set up a new government. They chose three people to lead it, a group known as a triumvirate. Simón Bolívar, a very famous leader, was one of these three.
Working with Bolívar
In 1819, Arismendi helped Bolívar and another general named José Antonio Páez. Together, they worked to push General Morillo out of New Granada and most of Venezuela. This was a big step towards winning independence.
Challenges and Loyalty
While Bolívar was away, the Angostura congress made Francisco Antonio Zea resign. Bolívar had chosen Zea as his vice-president. The congress then chose Arismendi to take Zea's place.
A Test of Loyalty
When Bolívar returned, he put Zea back in his position. Arismendi was then sent away to Margarita. Even after this, Arismendi remained loyal to Bolívar. In 1826, when Páez led an uprising, Arismendi supported Bolívar. He provided great help to the new nation during this time.
