Juan Emilio Bosch Gaviño (born June 30, 1909 – died November 1, 2001) was an important figure in the Dominican Republic. He was a politician, a historian, and a writer of short stories and essays. He also worked as an educator.
He became the first democratically elected President of the Dominican Republic in 38 years. He was president from February to September in 1963. Before becoming president, he led the group of Dominicans who opposed the harsh rule of Rafael Trujillo. He did this from outside the country for more than 25 years.

Early Life and Challenges
In 1934, Juan Bosch married Isabel García. They had two children together, named Leon and Carolina. During the time of Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship, Bosch was put in jail. This was because of his political ideas. After several months, he was released from prison.
In 1938, Bosch was able to leave the Dominican Republic. He moved to Puerto Rico and lived there for some time. From exile, he continued to work against the dictatorship.
Becoming President
After many years, the Dominican Republic finally had a chance for democracy. Juan Bosch was elected president in 1963. This was a very important moment for the country. He was the first leader chosen by the people in a long time. His time as president was short, lasting from February to September of that year.
His Legacy
Juan Bosch passed away on November 1, 2001. He had been in the hospital in Santo Domingo for some time. As a former president, he received special honors at the National Palace. He was buried in his hometown of La Vega. Juan Bosch is remembered as a key figure in the history of the Dominican Republic. He fought for democracy and was a respected writer and thinker.
