Early Life and Education

Juan Calzadilla was born in Altagracia de Orituco, a town in Venezuela. He was passionate about learning and art from a young age. To follow his dreams, he moved to the capital city, Caracas.

He studied at two important schools: the Universidad Central de Venezuela and the Instituto Pedagógico Nacional. At these universities, he gained the knowledge that would help him become a leading voice in Venezuelan culture.

The Whale's Roof

In 1961, Calzadilla helped start an important art group called El techo de la ballena (which means "The Whale's Roof" in English).
