Profession soldier and administrator (governor of New Mexico)

Juan Durán de Miranda was an important soldier and leader who served as the governor of New Mexico in the 1600s. He was the governor two separate times: first from 1664 to 1665, and then again from 1671 to 1675. We don't have a lot of information about his life.

Governor of New Mexico

Durán de Miranda first became the governor of New Mexico in 1664. However, his first time as governor was short. In 1665, some people, including Tomé Domínguez de Mendoza, had disagreements with him. These disagreements led to his temporary removal from office.

He was held for a short time in the Council jail in Santa Fe. His belongings were also taken. But he was later released after he explained his side of the story in Mexico City. He got his property and his position back.

When he returned for his second term as governor in 1671, there were still many disagreements. The government and the church often had different ideas about how to run things. This made it harder for the colonial leaders to govern effectively.

Because of these problems, many Native American people became unhappy with the Spanish Empire. Also, a service that provided food and other goods to the native population, called the Mission Supply Service, started giving out less. This caused some groups to protest against Governor Miranda's government.

In July 1671, Durán de Miranda promoted Juan Dominguez de Mendoza to a high military rank called Field marshal. Together, they led a military campaign. This campaign was against some groups of Gila Apache and "Siete Ríos Apaches" in the southern part of New Mexico.

In 1675, Juan Durán de Miranda was replaced as governor by Juan Francisco Treviño. After this, he moved to Mexico City.
