Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan Luis Vázquez Suárez is a smart professor from Spain who teaches Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). Applied Mathematics is a type of math that helps solve real-world problems.

Early Life and Education

Juan Luis Vázquez Suárez was born in Oviedo, Spain, on July 26, 1946. When he was a young man, from 1964 to 1969, he studied Telecommunication Engineering at a special school in Madrid called ETSIT.

Later, in 1973, he also earned a degree in Mathematics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He continued his studies there and received his Ph.D. (a very high degree) in 1979. His Ph.D. work was guided by a famous mathematician named Haïm Brezis.

What He Does: His Contributions

Professor Vázquez is a top researcher in a part of mathematics called nonlinear partial differential equations. These are complex math problems that help us understand things like how heat spreads or how fluids move.

He has written many important articles for science magazines. Some of these magazines include Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics.

He was also the president of the Spanish Society for Applied Mathematics (SEMA) from 1996 to 1998. He has helped organize big international meetings, like a conference in Toledo, Spain in 1993, and summer schools at the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Professor Vázquez has received many important awards for his work.

In 2003, he won the Spanish National Prize of Research in Mathematics, which is called the Premio Nacional de Investigación Julio Rey Pastor. In the same year, he was listed by Thomson Reuters as one of the most cited scientists. This means many other scientists used his work in their own research.

He was also asked to be a main speaker at a very important event called the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid in 2006 (ICM2006). He gave a big speech about how math helps us understand physics and geometry.

In 2012, he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a special honor given to mathematicians who have made great contributions.

His Books

Professor Vázquez has written several important books about mathematics. These books are often used by other mathematicians and students who want to learn more about his areas of study.

  • The Porous Medium Equation. Mathematical Theory. This book, published by Oxford University Press in 2006, is about a specific type of math equation.
  • Smoothing and Decay Estimates for Nonlinear Diffusion Equations. Equations of Porous Medium Type. Also from Oxford University Press in 2006, this book looks at how certain math equations behave over time.
  • A Stability Technique for Evolution Partial Differential Equations. A Dynamical Systems Approach. This book, published in 2003 with V.A. Galaktionov, talks about how to understand changes in math equations.
  • Recent Trends in Partial Differential Equations. This book, published in 2006 with X. Cabré and José A. Carrillo, shares new ideas in the field of partial differential equations.
