Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan Luis Vázquez Suárez is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) in Spain. He is a very important researcher in the field of mathematics.

Early Life and Education

Juan Luis Vázquez Suárez was born in Oviedo, Spain, on July 26, 1946. From 1964 to 1969, he studied Telecommunication Engineering at a special school in Madrid. This means he learned how to design systems for communication, like phones and the internet. In 1973, he earned a degree in Mathematics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He then continued his studies there and received his Ph.D. (a very high university degree) in 1979. His Ph.D. work was guided by a famous mathematician named Haïm Brezis.

Research and Contributions

Professor Vázquez Suárez is known for his excellent research in a part of mathematics called nonlinear partial differential equations. These equations help scientists understand how things change over time and space, like how heat spreads or how waves move. He has written many research articles that have been published in important science journals. Some of these include Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics. He was also the president of the Spanish Society for Applied Mathematics (SEMA) from 1996 to 1998. He has helped organize big international math events, such as the International Conference on Free Boundaries in 1993 in Toledo, Spain. He also organized Summer Schools at the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.

Awards and Honors

In 2003, Juan Luis Vázquez Suárez received the Spanish National Prize of Research in Mathematics (Premio Nacional de Investigación Julio Rey Pastor). This is a very important award in Spain. That same year, he was named one of the Highly Cited Scientists by Thomson Reuters. This means his research work is often used and referred to by many other scientists around the world. He was invited to be a main speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid in 2006 (ICM2006). He gave a special talk about how math helps us understand physics and geometry. In 2012, he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a special honor given to mathematicians who have made important contributions to the field.

Books

Professor Vázquez Suárez has written several important books about mathematics. Some of his books include:

  • The Porous Medium Equation. Mathematical Theory. This book is about how liquids and gases move through materials with tiny holes, like sponges.
  • Smoothing and Decay Estimates for Nonlinear Diffusion Equations. Equations of Porous Medium Type. This book also explores how things spread out over time.
  • A Stability Technique for Evolution Partial Differential Equations. A Dynamical Systems Approach. He wrote this book with V.A. Galaktionov.
  • Recent Trends in Partial Differential Equations. He wrote this book with X. Cabré and José A. Carrillo.
