Early Life and Education
Juan Ramón Lacadena Calero was born in Zaragoza, a city in Spain. He moved to Madrid to study at a special school for agricultural engineers called the Escuela Especial de Ingenieros Agrónomos. This is where he began his journey to become a leading scientist.
A Career in Science
After finishing his studies, Lacadena started working with the CSIC, which is Spain's main organization for scientific research.
He became a professor of genetics, the study of how features are passed from parents to their children. He taught at two major universities:
- The Universidad de La Laguna (1971)
- The UCM (1971–2005)
At both universities, he was the head of the Department of Genetics. He also played a big role in the Spanish Society of Genetics, serving as its secretary and later as its president.
Important Contributions
Professor Lacadena is a respected author in the science world. He has written more than 100 scientific papers about how tiny parts of our cells called chromosomes work. This field is known as cytogenetics.
He has also written over 80 articles about genetics and bioethics. Bioethics is the study of moral questions related to biology and medicine. Because of his expertise, he was chosen to be a member of two important groups:
