Juan Serrano Oteiza (born May 6, 1837, died March 26, 1886) was an important Spanish writer, politician, and legal expert. He lived in Madrid, Spain. He is best known for being one of the most famous anarchist thinkers in Spain during the 1800s. Anarchists believe in a society without a government, where people cooperate freely.

Early Life and Political Start

Juan Serrano Oteiza was born in Madrid in 1837. His father taught him how to make fans. But Juan decided to spend his life working for political change. We don't know if he went to law school. He might have been a notary, which is someone who can legally witness documents.

He started his political journey with the Federal Democratic Republican Party. Later, he joined a group called "Fomento de las Artes." This group was a center for popular education. Juan became its First Secretary and a very important member.

Working for Workers' Rights

In 1869, Juan Serrano Oteiza met Giuseppe Fanelli. Fanelli's ideas inspired him greatly. Juan then became one of the first members of the new group called the First International (AIT) in Madrid. This organization worked to unite workers around the world.

After the First International ended in 1873, Juan kept fighting for workers' rights. He and Tomás González Morago started a secret newspaper called El Orden [es] (The Command). This paper was published from 1875 to 1878.

In 1881, a new legal group was formed. It was called the "Federación de Trabajadores de la Región Española [es]" (FTRE). This group worked until 1888. Juan Serrano Oteiza represented Madrid at their meetings from 1882 to 1885. He also managed the Revista Social from 1881 to 1884. This magazine was seen as the main voice of the FTRE.

A Writer's Legacy

Besides his work in journalism, Juan Serrano Oteiza wrote many books. He wrote about social issues and legal topics. His most famous work is a utopian novel called Pensativo. A utopian novel describes an ideal or perfect society.

The book Pensativo was very popular. In 1885, it won first prize at a special competition. This competition was called the "Primer Certamen Socialista" and was held by the FTRE in Reus. The story in Pensativo is about a group of people. They explore a difficult valley and turn it into a "promised paradise." They do this by working together and sharing everything, following collectivist ideas.
