Juan Tomas Enriquez de Cabrera, 7th Duke of Medina de Rioseco facts for kids
Juan Tomás Enríquez de Cabrera y Ponce de Leon (born in Genoa, Italy, in 1646 – died in Estremoz, Portugal, in 1705) was an important Spanish noble and military leader. He held the title of the 7th Duke of Medina de Río-Seco.
Life and Career
Juan Tomás belonged to the powerful Enríquez family. Their special title, Duque de Medina de Río-Seco, was first given by King Charles I of Spain (also known as Emperor Charles V) in 1538.
His father was Juan Gaspar Enríquez de Cabrera y Sandoval. His grandfather, Juan Alfonso Enríquez de Cabrera, was the 5th Duke of Medina de Rioseco. His grandfather also served as a Viceroy (a ruler acting for the king) in Sicily and Naples.
Juan Tomás held many important jobs during his life:
- He was the 11th and last person to inherit the title of Admiral of Castile. This was a very old and important military role.
- He served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan from 1678 to 1686. A governor is like a leader of a region.
- He was the Viceroy of Catalonia in 1688.
- He was a member of the State Council, which advised the king.
- He worked as an ambassador in Rome and France, representing Spain in other countries.
- He was the Caballerizo mayor to the King, a high-ranking position in the royal court.
- In 1705, he became a Field Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire, a top military rank.
Juan Tomás had to leave Spain because of politics. He supported Archduke Charles of Austria during the War of Spanish Succession. This war was about who would become the next king of Spain. Because of his choice, he spent his last years living in Portugal, where he passed away in Estremoz.
Family Life
Juan Tomás Enríquez de Cabrera was married twice.
- In 1662, he married Ana Catalina de la Cerda Portocarrero. She was the daughter of Antonio de la Cerda, 7th Duke of Medinaceli.
- After his first wife died, he married again in 1697. His second wife was Ana Catalina de la Cerda y de Cardona-Aragon. She was his first wife's niece.
Juan Tomás did not have any children who survived. So, his brother, Luis Enríquez de Cabrera y Álvarez de Toledo, took over his titles after he died.
