Juan de Espinosa-Still life with grapes
Still-Life with Grapes, Flowers and Shells by Juan de Espinosa, The Louvre

Juan de Espinosa was a Spanish painter who lived in the 1600s. He was known for his beautiful still-life paintings. A still life is a picture that shows objects that don't move, like fruit, flowers, or dishes. It can be a bit confusing to learn about Juan de Espinosa because there were a few different artists with the same name who also painted still lifes around the same time!

About Juan de Espinosa

There were at least two important painters named Juan de Espinosa. One was likely older, and the other was younger.

The Older Juan de Espinosa

This painter was active around 1628. He signed some of his works as Joanes Bapta. Despinosa faciebat Anno D’1624. This artist was very good at painting silver objects. His style was similar to another painter named Juan van der Hamen. Both artists liked to arrange their paintings in a very neat and balanced way. We know that this Juan de Espinosa had passed away by 1641.

The Younger Juan de Espinosa

This Juan de Espinosa was still painting in 1659. He signed a legal document for another painter in 1645. Around the same time, he painted a still life of flowers and fruits that is now in The Louvre Museum in Paris.

This artist used bright colors and strong light in his paintings. He created complex scenes with many different objects. His paintings often showed grapes with a special glow, as if light was coming from inside them. He also painted detailed leaves and branches. His style was similar to another artist called Juan Fernández el Labrador.

Some of his famous works include:

  • Two fruit still lifes at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
  • A still life with a dead bird at the Museum of Córdoba.
  • An octagonal (eight-sided) still life with grapes, pears, apples, and a dead bird, painted in 1646, also at the Museo del Prado.

Other Artists with the Same Name

There was another painter named Juan de Espinosa who was alive at the same time. He passed away in 1653. This artist painted religious scenes. He worked on paintings for a church cloister (a covered walkway) in San Millán de la Cogolla. He used a style called chiaroscuro, which means using strong contrasts between light and dark.
