Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri (1709–1784) was an important Spanish leader. He was a nobleman, a politician, and a merchant. He served as a mayor (called alcalde) and a council member (called regidor) in Buenos Aires.
Early Life and Family
Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri was born in a place called Cortézubi. This town is in Biscay, Spain. His birthday was July 26, 1709.
His parents were Juan de Lezica y Gaçeaga and María de Torrezuri. His family was a noble family from the Basque region of Spain.
He married Elena de Alquiza y Peñaranda. She was born in La Paz, which is now in Bolivia. Elena's parents were Felipe de Alquiza and Juana María de Peñaranda.
Public Service and Achievements
Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri held many important public jobs. He was a commander of a special group of soldiers. This group was called "La Atrevida." They were part of the Cuerpo de Blandengues de la Frontera de Buenos Aires. Their job was to protect the borders and keep the peace.
He also served as the main mayor of Buenos Aires. He was also a mayor in La Paz. In 1755, he helped to start a new town. This town was named Luján, and it is in Buenos Aires.
