Exploring Chile
In 1535, Juan de Saavedra joined the first trip to Chile. This journey was led by Diego de Almagro. Saavedra was sent to explore the coast of Chile by ship. He sailed along the coast to find new areas.
He sailed very far, reaching a place called Alimapu. Saavedra decided to name this place Valparaíso. He named it after the town where he was born in Spain. Today, Valparaíso is a very important city in Chile.
A Time of Conflict
After his trip to Chile, Saavedra returned. There was a civil war happening in Peru at that time. Hernando Pizarro tried to get Saavedra to join his side. However, Saavedra chose not to pick a side in the fight.
Later, a new royal governor named Cristóbal Vaca de Castro arrived in Peru. He had full power from the king. Saavedra decided to join Governor Vaca de Castro. He fought bravely in the Battle of Chupas. This important battle happened on September 16, 1542.
