Juan de Soria (died October 1, 1246) was an important church leader in Spain. He was also known by other names like Juan Díaz, Juan Domínguez de Medina, or Juan Ruiz de Medina. Juan de Soria served as a bishop in two different areas: first as the Bishop of Osma from 1231 to 1240, and then as the Bishop of Burgos from 1240 until his death. He also worked for King Ferdinand III of Castile starting in 1211, helping with official documents and records.

Life and Church Career

Before he became a bishop, Juan de Soria was an abbot. An abbot is the head of a monastery or a large church. He served as abbot in Santander and Valladolid.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1231, Pope Gregory IX chose Juan de Soria to become the Bishop of Osma. This was a very important role in the Catholic Church. He served in Osma for nine years.

On May 29, 1240, Pope Gregory IX appointed him to an even more important position: Bishop of Burgos. Burgos was a major city in the Kingdom of Castile. Juan de Soria remained the Bishop of Burgos until he passed away on October 1, 1246.

While he was a bishop, he also helped other church leaders become bishops. For example, he played a key role in the ordination of Lope Fitero, who became the Bishop of Córdoba in 1237, and Rodrigo Díaz, who became the Bishop of Oviedo in 1243.

Writing History

Juan de Soria is also believed to have been a writer. Many historians think he wrote a book called the Latin Chronicle of the Kings of Castile. A chronicle is a historical record of events, usually written in the order they happened. This book was likely written between the years 1217 and 1239. It would have been an important record of the history of the kings of Castile during that time.
