Juan de Vega y Enríquez, 1st Count of Grajal, was an important Spanish nobleman and diplomat. He lived in the 1500s and served the powerful Emperor Charles V. Juan de Vega held several high-ranking jobs, including being an ambassador and a viceroy. A viceroy was like a governor who ruled a region in the name of a king or emperor.

Juan de Vega: A Life of Service

Juan de Vega was born in Grajal County, Spain. His full title was the 1st Count of Grajal and the 6th Lord of Grajal. He started his career as an ambassador for Emperor Charles V in Rome, Italy. An ambassador is a person who represents their country in another country.

While in Rome, Juan de Vega met a very important religious leader named Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius was the founder of a new religious group called the Jesuits. Juan de Vega greatly admired Ignatius and the Jesuits.

Viceroy of Sicily and the Jesuits

In 1547, Juan de Vega was appointed Viceroy of Sicily. Sicily is a large island south of Italy. As viceroy, he was the Emperor's main representative and military leader there. Because he respected the Jesuits so much, he brought some of them with him to Sicily.

The Jesuits opened a college in the city of Messina. This college was very successful. Its rules and teaching methods were later copied by other colleges. This helped the Jesuit order grow and spread its influence.

The Capture of Mahdia

Juan de Vega was also a military leader. In 1550, Emperor Charles V ordered him to capture the city of Mahdia in Tunisia. This city was a base for pirates who attacked ships and towns along the coast. The Emperor wanted to stop this piracy.

The military operation was called the Capture of Mahdia (1550). It was a big success. The Spanish navy, led by famous admirals like Andrea Doria and Bernardino de Mendoza, played a key role. After two years, Juan de Vega's army burned Mahdia.

Conflict with the Knights Hospitaller

Before the attack, Emperor Charles V had offered Mahdia to the Order of Saint John. This was a group of knight-monks who ruled the island of Malta. However, the Order refused to take control of Mahdia.

Because of their refusal, Juan de Vega was upset. He stopped the export of wheat from Sicily to Malta. This made it hard for the people on Malta to get food. To solve this problem, new mills were built on Malta to produce flour.

Later Life and Legacy

Juan de Vega died on December 20, 1558, in Sicily.

He was also a supporter of learning and science. The famous astronomer Francesco Maurolico tutored two of Juan de Vega's sons. Juan de Vega was Maurolico's most important supporter, helping him with his studies and work.

Juan de Vega held several important positions during his life:

  • He was the Viceroy of Navarre from 1542 to 1543.
  • He was the Viceroy of Sicily from 1547 to 1557.
