Juan de Zúñiga y Avellaneda, 1st Duke of Peñaranda de Duero (born in 1551 – died on September 4, 1608) was an important Spanish nobleman. He lived during the time when King Philip II and King Philip III ruled Spain.
Juan de Zúñiga held several important titles. He was a Knight of the Military Order of Santiago, which was a special group of knights. He also became the 6th Count of Miranda del Castañar through his marriage. This title was given by King Henry IV in 1457. Later, in 1608, King Philip III made him the 1st Duke of Peñaranda. A duke is a very high-ranking nobleman.

Viceroy of Catalonia
In 1583, King Philip II chose Juan de Zúñiga to be the Viceroy of Catalonia. A viceroy was like a governor who ruled a region in the name of the king. He took over from Carlo d'Aragona Tagliavia. Juan de Zúñiga held this important job until 1586. After him, Manrique de Lara y Girón became the new viceroy.
Viceroy of Naples
In 1586, Juan de Zúñiga moved to another big role. He became the Viceroy of Naples. Naples was a very important part of the Spanish empire in Italy. He replaced Pedro Girón, 1st Duke of Osuna in this position. Juan de Zúñiga served as Viceroy of Naples until 1595. Then, Enrique de Guzmán, 2nd Count of Olivares took his place.
President of Royal Councils
Juan de Zúñiga also led important councils that advised the king. He was the President of the Council of Italy. This council helped manage Spanish lands in Italy. From 1600 to 1606, he became the President of the Council of Castile. This was a very powerful position in Spain, working directly for King Philip III.
