Early Life and Career Beginnings
Juanita Phillips was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She started her career in 1982 as a young journalist at a newspaper called The Courier-Mail. There, she learned the ropes and became a writer who focused on special stories and wrote regular columns.
Working in Television News
In the early 1990s, Juanita began working in television. She was a reporter and presenter at a TV station in Brisbane called TVQ-10. Soon after, in 1993, she became a regular presenter for the weekend news on Ten Eyewitness News.
A year later, Juanita moved to Sydney. She joined Ron Wilson to co-present Ten News First at Five. She was a main female presenter for this news show for two years.
After working with Sky News Australia, Juanita moved to London in 1997. There, she worked as a news presenter for BBC World News. She also worked at CNN International in London, often co-anchoring a show called CNN Today. Later, she returned to Australia to present the weekend news for ABC News in New South Wales.
Her Time at ABC News
In 2003, Juanita Phillips became a co-anchor for ABC News NSW with Tony Eastley. She later became the main presenter for the news bulletin by herself.
In 2007, Juanita wrote several articles for an Australian magazine called The Bulletin. One of her articles was about an animal rights activist named Lyn White.
On 30 November 2007, Juanita had a moment on air where she started coughing a lot while presenting ABC News NSW. The TV station had to quickly switch to another news broadcast from Melbourne until she felt better. She later wrote in her 2010 book, A Pressure Cooker Saved My Life, that this was due to stress affecting her throat.
In July 2023, Juanita announced that she was leaving the ABC after 21 years. She had presented about 4,500 news bulletins during her time there! Her last news show was on Sunday, 10 September. Jeremy Fernandez took over her role as presenter.
