Early Life and Education
Juice Newton was born in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Her father was a Navy officer. Her mother gave her a guitar for her 13th birthday. This helped her start her music journey.
After high school, she went to Foothill College in California. During this time, she sang folk music in coffeehouses. She then formed a folk-rock band. She toured bars in Northern California with her band.
Music Career
Starting Out in Music
In the early 1970s, Newton formed a band called Juice Newton & Silver Spur. They signed with RCA Records. The band released two albums but only had one song on the country charts. After that, they moved to Capitol Records in 1977. The band broke up soon after releasing one more album.
In late 1977, Newton started her solo career. She continued to record for Capitol Records. Her backing band was still called Silver Spur until 1982. Newton also sang backup for other artists.
Her first solo song, "It's a Heartache", became a big hit in Mexico. It was certified Gold there. In 1978, she released it in the United States. This song was her first of 11 hits on the "Hot 100" pop charts.
In 1978, The Carpenters recorded a song Newton helped write. It was called "Sweet, Sweet Smile". This song reached the Top 10 on country and adult contemporary charts. In 1978, she officially changed her name to Juice Newton. "Juice" had been her nickname for a long time.
Newton's first solo album, Well Kept Secret, came out in 1978. It did not become a big hit. But Capitol Records still believed in her. In 1979, she had her first Top-40 country hit with "Let's Keep It That Way". Later that year, her album Take Heart had five songs that charted.
Pop Music Success in the 1980s
In 1981, Newton released her third solo album, simply called Juice. This album was a huge success. It had three Top-10 pop hits in a row. These were "Angel of the Morning", "Queen of Hearts", and "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)". "The Sweetest Thing" also became her first number one country song.
In 1981, Newton's music video for "Angel of the Morning" was special. It was the first country music video shown on MTV. It was also one of the first videos ever shown on the channel.
The album Juice sold over a million copies in the United States. It sold 300,000 copies in Canada, earning Triple-Platinum status. "Angel of the Morning" and "The Sweetest Thing" both reached number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. In 1982, Newton was nominated for two Grammy Awards.
These two songs became her biggest sellers in the U.S. They each earned a Gold certification. This meant they sold over a million copies at the time. The songs were also popular in Canada, Australia, and other countries. "Angel of the Morning" reached number one in Canada.
In 1982, Newton released her fourth solo album, Quiet Lies. It sold 900,000 copies in the U.S. and went platinum in Canada. From this album came the Top 10 pop hit "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me". This song earned her another Grammy nomination.
The second song from the album was "Break It to Me Gently". It hit number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. It also reached number two on the Country chart. This song won Newton her first Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Newton's next album, Dirty Looks (1983), had a more rock sound. It had a hit song called "Tell Her No". This album sold over 300,000 copies in the U.S. and went Gold in Canada.
Newton then moved back to RCA Records in 1984. Her album Can't Wait All Night continued with a rock sound. The song "A Little Love" became her last Top-10 hit on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart.

Juice Newton had always been popular in country music. As her pop popularity changed, she focused more on country. Her 1985 album, Old Flame, was made just for country fans. This was a great move for her career. The album reached number 12 on the country charts.
Old Flame had six Top-10 country hits. Three of them reached number one. These were "You Make Me Want to Make You Mine", "Hurt", and "Both to Each Other" (with Eddie Rabbitt). These songs did not appear on the pop charts. The album kept producing hit songs for over a year.
Newton had another Top 10 country hit in 1988 with "Tell Me True". This was from her 1987 album Emotion. Her last album of the 1980s was Ain't Gonna Cry (1989). It had her last Top-40 country hit, "When Love Comes Around the Bend".
After 1989, Newton took a break from recording albums. She wanted to focus on her family. She still toured sometimes. She returned to music in the late 1990s. She released albums like The Trouble with Angels (1998) and American Girl (1999).
