Juice Newton (born Judith Kay Newton on February 18, 1952) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. She is famous for her hit songs in both the pop and country styles.

Newton has been nominated for five Grammy Awards and won one in 1983. She also won an ACM Award for Top New Female Artist. She has earned several Gold and Platinum records, which means her albums have sold hundreds of thousands or even millions of copies. In the 1980s, she had 14 top 10 hits on the Billboard charts, including six songs that reached the number one spot.

Early Life and School

Juice Newton was born in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Her father was an officer in the U.S. Navy. Her mother saw that she loved music and gave her a guitar when she was 13 years old.

After graduating from high school in Virginia Beach, Virginia, she went to Foothill College in California. While in college, she played folk music at local coffee shops. She later started a band with guitarist and songwriter Otha Young. They played in bars across Northern California.

Music Career

Starting Out

In the early 1970s, Newton, Otha Young, and Tom Kealey started a band called Juice Newton & Silver Spur. They signed with RCA Records and released two albums. However, only one of their songs, "Love Is a Word," made it onto the country music charts. After RCA dropped them, they signed with Capitol Records in 1977 but broke up after one more album.

Newton started her solo career in late 1977 but kept Silver Spur as her backup band for a few years. In 1978, her song "It's a Heartache" became a huge hit in Mexico. It was her first of 11 songs to make it onto the "Hot 100" pop chart in the United States. That same year, she officially changed her first name from Judith to her longtime nickname, Juice.

Her first solo album, Well Kept Secret, came out in 1978 but didn't sell well. Still, Capitol Records decided to keep working with her. In 1979, she had her first Top 40 country hit with "Let's Keep It That Way."

Pop Music Stardom in the 1980s

Newton's big break came in 1981 with her album Juice. It had three huge pop hits in a row: "Angel of the Morning", "Queen of Hearts", and "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)". "The Sweetest Thing" also became her first number-one country hit.

The music video for "Angel of the Morning" was the very first country music video ever shown on MTV. Newton was one of the first female solo artists to be featured on the channel. The Juice album sold over a million copies in the U.S. and was also very popular in Canada. For her songs "Angel of the Morning" and "Queen of Hearts," Newton received two Grammy nominations.

In 1982, she released the album Quiet Lies. It included the hit songs "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me" and "Break It to Me Gently". For "Break It to Me Gently," she won a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Her 1983 album, Dirty Looks, had a stronger rock sound. It was a moderate success. After this album, she left Capitol Records and returned to RCA Records.

Switching from Pop to Country

As her pop songs became less popular, Newton decided to focus completely on country music. Her 1985 album, Old Flame, was a big success in the country world. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard country album chart and had six Top 10 country hits.

Three of these songs, "You Make Me Want to Make You Mine", "Hurt", and "Both to Each Other" (a duet with Eddie Rabbitt), went to number one.

She continued to have country hits into the late 1980s. After her 1989 album, Ain't Gonna Cry, she took a break from recording to focus on her family.

Later Career and Recent Work

Newton returned to music in the late 1990s and released two new albums: The Trouble with Angels (1998) and American Girl (1999).

Her music has remained popular and has been used in movies and TV shows.

  • In 2005, she appeared on the TV show Hit Me Baby, One More Time, where she performed her hit "Queen of Hearts."
  • Her version of "Angel of the Morning" was used in the opening credits of the 2016 movie Deadpool. This caused the song to reappear on the Billboard Country chart.
  • The same song was also featured in a key scene in the Oscar-winning 2021 movie Promising Young Woman.

On August 6, 2009, her longtime music partner, Otha Young, passed away. They had worked together for 37 years. Newton continues to tour and release music, including a Christmas album and an album of duets.

Personal Life

In 1985, Newton married Tom Goodspeed, a polo star and coach. They have two children, Jessica and Tyler. Besides her music career, Newton is also involved with horses. She buys and sells them, specializing in European breeds.
