Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Julaolinja (also known as Ulaolinya or Yurlayurlanya) were an Indigenous Australian group. They lived in the state of Queensland, Australia.

Where the Julaolinja Lived

The Julaolinja people lived in a region of Queensland called the Channel Country. Their traditional lands covered about 2,400 square miles (6,200 square kilometers). This area was mainly around the upper Mulligan River and Carlo Springs. A researcher named Norman Tindale estimated the size of their territory.

Julaolinja History and Trade

The Julaolinja were important in trade among different Indigenous groups. According to Kevin Tibbett, they were one of three main groups. The other two were the Wongkadjera and the Rungarungawa.

They lived near the Mulligan River, where a special plant called pituri grew. This plant was very important for trade. Because of their location, the Julaolinja helped control trade routes. These routes went from the northeast to the southwest.

Later, when European settlers arrived, the Julaolinja moved. They shifted their homes east to the area around Marion Downs.
