Jules Chevalier (born March 15, 1824 – died October 21, 1907) was a French Catholic priest. He is famous for starting two important religious groups. These are the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) for men, and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (FDNSC) for women. He also founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. All these groups, along with their lay helpers, are known together as the "Chevalier Family."
Father Chevalier also helped spread a special devotion. It was to an image he called Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. This image was honored by Pope Pius IX in 1869. Later, in 1874, the church where the image was kept became a special place called a minor basilica.

The Early Life of Jules Chevalier
Jules Chevalier was born in Richelieu, France. This was on March 15, 1824. His family was not wealthy. When he was just 12 years old, he wanted to become a priest. However, his parents could not afford to send him to a special school called a seminary.
Becoming a Shoemaker
Because of money problems, young Jules started learning a trade. He became an apprentice shoemaker. An apprentice learns a skill by working with an experienced person. Even while working, Jules never gave up his dream of becoming a priest. He kept hoping for a chance to study.
A Dream Comes True
Luckily, a kind person helped him. His father's boss offered to pay for his studies. This generous help allowed Jules to finally join the seminary. He worked very hard and studied for many years. His determination helped him achieve his goal.
Becoming a Priest and Founder
Jules Chevalier became a priest at the age of 30. This was in 1854. He was then sent to work in the parish of Issoudun, France. This town would become very important in his life's work.
Starting New Religious Orders
In 1854, the same year he became a priest, he founded his first religious group. This was the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. This group was for men who wanted to serve God. Their mission was to spread God's love and kindness.
Later, in 1874, he founded another group. This one was for women. It was called the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. These sisters also dedicated their lives to serving others. They focused on education and helping those in need.
Spreading Devotion
Father Chevalier had a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He also had a special love for Mary, Jesus's mother. He believed Mary had a special role in showing people God's love. This led him to promote the devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. He wanted everyone to know about this special way of praying.
A Special Recognition
His efforts to spread this devotion were recognized. In 1869, Pope Pius IX honored the image of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. This was a very important moment. It showed the Church's support for this devotion. Five years later, in 1874, the church in Issoudun became a minor basilica. This is a special title given to important churches.
