The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSC) are a group of Catholic religious people. They are also known as MSCs. This group was started in 1854 by Jules Chevalier. He founded them in a town called Issoudun in France.
The main idea for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart is: "May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be loved everywhere!" The priests, deacons, and brothers in this group are called MSCs. This comes from the Latin words Missionarii Sacratissimi Cordis. Their main office is in Rome, Italy. They have many communities all around the world.

History of the Missionaries

Jules Chevalier started the group in 1854. He also created a special group called the Archconfraternity of the Sacred Heart in 1864. This group helped people learn about the Sacred Heart.
In 1867, the MSCs opened their first school. It was in a place called Chezal-Benoît in France. This was an important step for their mission.
Spreading the Mission Worldwide
The MSCs began their work in other countries in 1882. Three missionaries from Barcelona went to New Britain island. This was near Rabaul in Papua. They started their first mission there.
Later, in 1885, they began another mission. This one was at Yule Island. It was also in Papua New Guinea.
The MSCs in Australia
In 1885, a base was set up in Sydney, Australia. This base helped support the missions in Papua New Guinea. The Australian part of the MSCs became an official province in 1905.
Some Australian MSCs did important missionary work. For example, Bishop Gsell worked with Australian Aborigines. Another MSC, Fr Frank Flynn, was an eye doctor. He helped many people with their vision.
The MSCs also had a large building in Kensington, New South Wales. It was called the Sacred Heart Monastery. This monastery was home to important Catholic thinkers. They also published a magazine about Catholic culture.
Expanding to Other Countries
Over the years, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart grew. They set up official groups, called provinces, in many countries.
- The Netherlands (1894)
- The United States (1939)
- Spain (1946)
- Ireland (1952)
- Indonesia (1971)
- The Dominican Republic (1986)
These provinces help the MSCs continue their work around the globe.
