Julia Álvarez Resano was born on August 10, 1903, in Villafranca, a town in Navarre, Spain. She was a very bright student. She first trained to be a teacher in Pamplona. In 1923, she passed a special exam to become a school teacher in Zaragoza.
Education and Early Career
Julia was always interested in learning. She later went to the University of Zaragoza. In 1933, she earned a licentiate degree in Law. This means she became a qualified lawyer.
In 1935, she married Amancio Muñoz Zafra. He was also a lawyer and a politician from the same party.
Making History in Politics
Julia Álvarez Resano first joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This is a major political party in Spain. She ran for election in 1933 but was not successful.
However, in the 1936 election, she was elected! She became a member of the Congress of Deputies. This was a big achievement for a woman at that time.
During a difficult time in Spain (1937–1938), she took on another important role. She served as the civil governor of the province of Ciudad Real. This made her the first woman ever to hold such a high position in Spain. A civil governor is like a top official in charge of a region.
Life in Exile
After the Spanish Civil War ended, Julia had to leave Spain. She went to France. There, she helped organize a group called the Spanish Refugee Evacuation Service (SERE). This group helped Spanish people who had to leave their homes.
Later, Julia moved to Mexico in 1947. She passed away in Mexico City on May 19, 1948. Years later, in 2009, her party officially welcomed her back as a member, honoring her contributions.
