About Julia Corner
Julia Corner was born in London, England, in 1798. Her father, John Corner, was an engraver. She started her writing career by creating novels.
Writing History Books
In 1840, Julia Corner published two important history books: The History of Spain and Portugal and the History of France. People liked that her books were affordable and well-intentioned. These history books grew into a large collection known as Miss Corner's Historical Library.
Books for Young Readers
Julia Corner wrote many simple stories and instructional books for children. She also wrote history books about ancient groups like the Britons, Saxons, and Normans. Publishers like Henry George Bohn printed her books, including ones about India and China in the 1850s.
Her history books, part of Miss Corner's Historical Library, often included:
- Fun facts and stories
- Tables of important dates
- Maps to help readers understand geography
- Questions to make kids think about what they read, similar to the style of Richmal Mangnall
She even published an educational book with questions about Europe. She saw this as a follow-up to Richmal Mangnall's popular book, Questions for the Use of Young People.
Plays and Other Works
Julia Corner also updated books by other writers. For example, she revised Anne Rodwell's A Child's First Step to the History of England. She also wrote plays for children as part of Dean & Son's series, Little Plays for Little People. She believed these plays were very good for learning.
In 1854, she wrote a children's play based on the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast. This play featured illustrations by Alfred Henry Forrester, who was also known as Alfred Crowquill.
Later Life
Julia Corner passed away in Notting Hill on August 16, 1875. She never married or had children. By the end of her life, she had written or contributed to almost 250 different books, leaving a lasting mark on children's education.
