Julia María Otero Pérez (born May 6, 1959) is a famous Spanish journalist. She has worked in both radio and television for many years. Julia is known for her clear voice and interesting interviews.

Biography

Early Life and Radio Beginnings

Julia Otero was born in Monforte de Lemos, Spain. When she was three years old, her family moved to Barcelona. She grew up in the El Poble-sec neighborhood. Julia studied Spanish philology at the University of Barcelona. This means she studied the history and development of the Spanish language.

At just 17, Julia started her career in radio by chance. A friend introduced her to a program called Protagonista, el cine on Radio Sabadell. Soon, she became the host and director of this show. Between the ages of 19 and 24, Julia faced health challenges. She had an abdominal tumor and needed six surgeries. Even so, she kept working on the radio.

In 1980, she joined Radio Juventud in Barcelona. A year later, she moved to Radio Miramar. There, she worked in news and hosted several shows. These included Radio a la vista, Bruja más que bruja, and Café del domingo. In 1985, she began directing and hosting the morning show Crónica del alba. This show was broadcast across Spain.

Moving to Television

Julia started her television career in 1987. Her first TV show was Una historia particular on La 2. This was a debate program. In the same year, she married journalist Ramón Pellicer. Their marriage lasted six years.

In 1988, Julia became very popular hosting the show 3×4 [es]. Over the next few years, she hosted other TVE programs. These included La Lluna, La luna [es], and La Ronda.

Back to Radio and New Challenges

In 1991, Julia returned to radio with La Radio de Julia on Onda Cero. This show was a big success. It moved from a nighttime slot to the late afternoon. She hosted and directed it until 1999. During this time, she also worked on television.

She presented Jocs de Nit on TV3 in 1992. In 1993, she directed Los cinco sentidos on Antena 3. She also hosted Un paseo por el tiempo on TVE in 1995. In 1998, she hosted La semana que viene on Telecinco. Julia also wrote columns for the newspaper La Vanguardia in 1997.

In 1999, Onda Cero was sold to a new company. They decided to cancel Julia Otero's popular show. This decision caused some controversy. Many people thought it was for political reasons. The network said the show was too "intellectually lofty." La radio de Julia had many famous contributors. These included writers, politicians, and other journalists.

A year later, Julia returned to TV3. She hosted the news magazine La columna. This show was also very popular and ran for four seasons. From 2004 to 2005, she hosted Las cerezas [es] on TVE's La 1.

From 2006 to 2007, she directed and hosted Protagonistas [es] on Punto Radio [es]. At the same time, she hosted No em ratllis! on TV3. In June 2007, Julia and Punto Radio ended their contract.

A Recognized Journalist

In September 2007, Julia Otero went back to Onda Cero. She started hosting Julia en la onda [es]. This was a return to the radio station where her show La Radio de Julia began. Her good relationship with the president of Planeta Group, which owns Onda Cero, helped her return.

In December 2009, Julia was named hija predilecta de Monforte. This means "favorite daughter of Monforte." She was the first woman to receive this special honor from her hometown.

In May 2012, she returned to television to host Entrevista a la carta [es] on TVE. In August 2013, she hosted two special programs called Ciudadanos [es] on Antena 3. These specials focused on important topics like unemployment and education.
