Julia Palmer was an English writer who lived in the 1600s. She is known for her special kind of poetry. Her poems were often about her religious beliefs.

Who Was Julia Palmer?

Julia Palmer was a poet from England. She wrote many poems during a time when it was not common for women to be published authors. Her work gives us a peek into the thoughts and feelings of people in the 17th century.

Her Life and Family

We don't know exactly when or where Julia Palmer was born. We do know she married Thomas Palmer on May 12, 1664. This wedding took place in London, at a church called All Hallows. Her birth name was Hungerford.

A few years later, in 1667, Julia and Thomas had a son named Stephen. He was baptized in Westminster. After this, it seems Julia became a Presbyterian. This was a type of Christian faith that was different from the main church in England at the time. Her husband, Thomas, might have been a preacher. He may have passed away in 1681.

Her Amazing Poetry

Between 1671 and 1673, Julia Palmer wrote over 200 poems! She dedicated these poems to a man named Joseph Biscoe. He was a well-known apothecary. An apothecary was like a pharmacist or chemist who prepared and sold medicines.

Joseph Biscoe was also a "non-conformist." This means he didn't follow the main church's rules. He later became a leader of the Society of Apothecaries. Julia's son, Stephen, was also involved with apothecaries. He was an apprentice, learning the trade.

Her Work Today

For a long time, Julia Palmer's poems were not widely known. But in 2001, her work was finally published! The book was called The 'Centuries' of Julia Palmer. It was put together by Elizabeth Clarke and Victoria Elizabeth Burke. Thanks to them, more people can now read and learn about Julia Palmer's unique poetry.
