Early Life and Military Service
Julian Royds Gribble was born in London, England. His parents were George James Gribble and Norah Gribble. He had a sister named Vivien Gribble, who was an artist. During World War I, Vivien helped out in the Women's Land Army.
Julian joined the British Army and became a temporary captain. He served with the 10th Battalion of The Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was only 21 years old when he showed incredible bravery during the First World War.
Awarded the Victoria Cross
Captain Gribble earned his Victoria Cross on March 23, 1918. This happened during a battle near Beaumetz, on Hermies Ridge in France. His actions that day were very heroic. The Victoria Cross is given for the most outstanding acts of bravery when facing the enemy.
His Final Days
After his brave actions, Captain Gribble was taken as a prisoner of war. He was held at the Niederzwehren Prisoner of War Camp in Germany. Sadly, he became ill with pneumonia and passed away there. He was still only 21 years old.
Julian Gribble died just 14 days after World War I officially ended. At that time, it was difficult to bring prisoners of war home quickly. He is remembered on the War Memorial in Long Bredy, Dorset. His sister Vivien also designed a special memorial window for him in Preston, Hertfordshire.
The Victoria Cross Medal
Sadly, Captain Gribble's Victoria Cross medal was later destroyed in a house fire. No new medal was issued to replace it.
