Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Julian Karol Sochocki (born February 2, 1842, in Warsaw, which was then part of the Russian Empire – died December 14, 1927, in Leningrad, Soviet Union) was a smart mathematician from Poland and Russia. You might see his name spelled a few different ways, like Sokhotski or Sochotski. He is famous for some important ideas in math.

His Life and Discoveries

Julian Sochocki was born in Warsaw, a city in Poland. At that time, Poland was controlled by Russia. He went to a state school there. In 1860, he started studying at the University of Saint Petersburg. His studies were put on hold for a few years, from 1860 to 1865. This happened because he was involved with a Polish movement that wanted more freedom for Poland. He had to go back to Warsaw to avoid getting into trouble.

In 1866, he finished his studies at the University of Saint Petersburg. He earned his master's degree in 1868 and his doctorate in 1873. His master's paper was one of the first in Russia to talk about a math method called Cauchy's method of residues. This paper had many of his own new ideas. His doctoral paper included a very important math idea known today as the Sokhotski–Plemelj theorem.

From 1868, Sochocki taught at the University of Saint Petersburg. He started as a private teacher, then became a full professor in 1882, and later a special honored professor in 1893. In 1894, he was chosen to be a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Julian Sochocki passed away on December 14, 1927, in a nursing home in Leningrad.

He is mostly remembered for two big math ideas: the Casorati–Sokhotski–Weierstrass theorem and the Sokhotski–Plemelj theorem. These theorems are very important in a part of math called complex analysis.
