Julianne Pierce
Occupation New media artist and arts manager/creative producer

Julianne Pierce is an Australian artist, writer, and manager who works with new media. New media often means art that uses computers, the internet, or other digital tools. She is also a curator, which means she helps organize art shows.

Julianne was part of an important group called VNS Matrix. Later, she helped start another group called the Old Boys Network. Both groups explored how technology and art could work together.

She has held many leadership roles in the arts. For example, she was the head of the Australian Dance Theatre. She also led the Emerging and Experimental Arts Strategy Panel for the Australia Council. From 2000 to 2005, Julianne was the executive director of the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) in Adelaide. She also worked as an Executive Producer for Blast Theory in the UK from 2007 to 2012.

Julianne has been involved with ISEA International for a long time. This organization hosts big events about art and technology. She helped plan their symposiums and was the Chair of their International Board from 2001 to 2011.

Since 2022, she has worked with the Adelaide Film Festival. She manages and leads the AFF Expand Lab. This program helps Australian artists, filmmakers, and digital creators learn from each other. They work with mentors to create new projects using moving images and virtual reality.

What is Cyberfeminism?

Julianne Pierce is well-known for her ideas about cyberfeminism. This term describes how women used technology to explore new ideas about identity and society. Some people think VNS Matrix, the group Julianne was in, helped create this term. However, Julianne believes the idea popped up in many places at once.

Cyberfeminism and New Media Art

Julianne often talks about the early work of VNS Matrix and how it relates to cyberfeminism. She explains that cyberfeminism was about new ideas, humor, and learning how to use digital tools. It mixed a hopeful vision of challenging old ways of thinking with excitement for new technology.

It also looked at gender and identity. It allowed people to explore different identities online, not just those tied to their physical bodies. Julianne described the "post-corporeal female" as an online explorer. This explorer would create her own virtual worlds in cyberspace.

In 2022, Julianne wrote the introduction for the Cyberfeminism Index. This book, put together by Mindy Seu, looks at how people from different backgrounds use technology. It explores how hackers, artists, and activists think humans can rebuild themselves through technology.
